part 4 of 14 (the fields)

It would be nearly dark, before searchers would find the fire truck in the
Jacksons barn. Once again the crooks had taken a wrong road and had been on
their way back towards town, when they spotted the Jackson's barn. After they
hid the fire truck in the barn, the pair took what they thought was a shortcut
across some fields.
The money bags were heavy, the ground very wet, and
neither of them were wearing gumboots. The water was getting into their shoes
making their socks wet, plus the mud was sticking to their shoes making them
very heavy. The stubble of the recently cut straw was poking up their trouser
legs, sticking in their socks, and scratching their legs. The pair were feeling
very sorry for themselves, when they saw a building on the far side of the field.
They decided to explore the building, but first they needed to hide the cash.
There were a few Macrocarpa trees in the field, so they buried the loot near them.
The building turned out to be an old house, there was an old couple sitting, heads
down, sleeping on the old veranda, they were Nan and granddad. The two robbers
climbed over the fence and walked over to the sleeping pair. The bigger of the two
clapped his hands loudly, and shouted "BOO!!". Granddad nearly fell out of his chair,
Nan squealed, and aimed to slap the robbers head, he caught her hand.
"Nasty eh? we will have to teach you a lesson in hospitality".he said.
"Hospitality", shrieked Nan screwing up her face, is for visitors, you!!, you're
intruders". "Yeah!, well we're staying for a while, welcome or not. Now, we're
tired and hungry, as well as wet and cold, so lets all go inside where you can make
us comfortable". As they went in the house, Nan was complaining loudly about their
muddy shoes. "Did you hold up the supermarket ?, wow!, just you two on your own
robbed the supermarket", said granddad suddenly, almost shouting. "What are you
shouting for ?", said the big man, who was obviously the leader and the brains,
what few there were in the outfit.
