*** Big Eyes ***

by Bobby Mac

part 8 of 13 ( Big Eyes )

But Dorothy didn't stop crying, neither did any of the other little Magpies.
Dora had to admit, the rustling seemed to be getting louder and the noise
was not like the wind blowing through the trees. Later Dora went to
tuck in Dorothy who had cried herself to sleep. As Dora went to put a peck
on Dorothy's forehead, she caught sight of a shining object. It looked
like a big eye staring at her from a large branch of the Crab Apple tree,
and then, it just disappeared so quickly that Dora really wasn't sure she
had seen anything at all. “NO”, she said to herself, “it's just those
naughty boys Desmond and Dillon I bet”. After getting herself ready for bed,
Dora thought she had better check on Dorothy just once more. The rustling
was still going on but there didn't seem to be anyone about down on the
ground, and nobody could get up the Oak tree, not without Dora
and her husband seeing them. She looked over towards the Crab Apple tree,
and there staring back at her were not one, but two big shining eyes.
Dora closed her eyes, squeezed them really tight, and opened them again,
but the big eyes were still shining back at her.
“Hello”, said a deep voice, “I'm sorry if I startled you, I've just stopped for a rest
before I join the other birds leaving Granny's garden”.
“Leaving ?”, asked Dora, hardly able to hide her pleasure.
“Oh yes”, said the big eyes, “haven't you heard ?, Granny and Granddad
have got some new pets”.
“Really”, said Dora, “what kind of pets ?”.
“I don't know what they're called”, said the big eyes, “but boy !, they are big,
and I heard Granny say they eat a lot so she and Granddad are going to
lots of nice food out.
Fabulous, thought Dora, “Yum !”, said Desmond and Dillon who had been listening.
“Yes”, went on the eyes, “she's going to fatten the birds up so she can feed them to
the new pets that arrived just as it was getting dark. Didn't you see them ?,
didn't you hear them ?, didn't you even smell them ?, don't tell me you didn't
feel the earth shake and even the trees tremble !”.
