part 9 of 13 ( feathers)

“Oh!, is that what it was”, said Dora
Magpie, not that she was sure what it was she was talking about, or to, but, whatever,
or, whoever it was she didn’t want to be its dinner. The other Magpies started to gather
outside Dora’s nest,”tell us more”, they asked of the big eyes.
“Sorry”, said the big eyes, “I have to go, there are some deserted nests in a couple of
big old Macracarpa trees in what’s left of the field over the back aid I want to make
sure I get the best one before they all go, tooo wit, tooo woo, can’t stay with you, too
wit, too wooooooooooooooo!”. The sound of big eyes last words as he went
seemed to fill the night with a cold ghostly chill and made Dora shiver.
“Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr”, she said.
“Scare tactics”, Mr. Arthur Magpie declared, “well it won't work, all we heard was a
rustling in the bushes, it’s an immature attempt at getting rid of us, tomorrow we eat!!”.
“That’s what they think”, said Tigger busily working away in the garden. All night long
the animals worked and as the sun began to rise in the morning the scene was set.
Dora Magpie had no reason to use a watch or a clock or even look at the sun to see
what time of the day it was, she just knew when she heard the sound of small birds
twittering and saw them flying towards Granny’s backyard it was mealtime. She heard
that silly little bird that Granny thought so much of, singing.
“Siiiiiiiing for meeeeeeeee Elllllllvis”, mimicked Dora as she woke all the family.
It wasn’t long before they were flying off to the trees and bushes surrounding Granny’s
backyard where the big white table stood, soon to be covered in different kinds of
bread, current buns and coconut kisses, plump sultanas and sunflower seeds.
“Yummm!, thought Dora, Desmond and Dillon. “Ohhh!!, when?, said Dorothy,
“when!!!?. “Stop whining”, said her mother, “somethings not right here, where are all
the other birds?”. Mr. Magpie and his brother swooped down low and as they got near
the ground they could see feathers, lots and lots of feathers and clumps of grey fur.
