*** Max's Mission ***

by Bobby Mac

part 5 of 13 ( Max's Mission )

He could hear the Frogs at the Pond and as he went around behind the Plum
trees he could see the white blossoms and smell the sweet smell of the citrus
trees and the Jasmine. Not far now he thought, as he could see the ducks laying
beside the pond.
“What do you want ?”, asked Charlie Drake the big duck leader.
“I'm on important business for my Dad !!”, replied Max, “I have to go over
the bridge and find Henry Hedgehog's brother Horace, I'm not allowed
to tell anyone else, only Horace”.
“Hold on”, said Charlie, “I'll just wake Matilda ad I'll come with you”. So
Charlie and Max went over the little bridge, down behind the Agapanthus,
in front of the Bamboo Cane.
“Horace, oh Horace”, called Charlie, “Horace”.
“Okay, okay, I can hear you”, said Horace grumpily, “I was just going
out to eat, what's the matter ?”. Max told Horace and Charlie what was
going on.
“Well, I'd better get a move on”, said Horace, “I've got a lot to do”
“I can help”, said Charlie, “I'll alert the Hens and my ducks and I'll
tell Sinbad the Seagull when he calls first thing in the morning, they
will be interested I'm sure, after all, not even the Seagulls will get any food
after the Magpies are finished, and if we don't stop them as soon as they start,
we will all be looking for a new home”.
“I agree”, said Horace, “once the little birds go, then the Magpies will
pick on all of us in turn until there's only Magpies left”.
Early the next morning, just before the sun was up, Sinbad Seagull knocked
on Belinda Blackbird's nest. “Hello”, he said, “I'm afraid you were right,
there's trouble !”, and explained what Charlie Drake had heard.
Belinda Blackbird called an emergency meeting of the bird elders.
