*** The New Comers ***

by Bobby Mac

part 1 of 13 ( the new comers )

In the North Island of New Zealand, near Mount Ruapehu, was a small town.
One of the new families in the town was the Magpie family. They were staying
with relatives but it was very crowded, so they were looking for somewhere else to
build a home. Somewhere where there was a good supply of food and water.
Mr. Arthur Magpie and his brother flew around searching.
On the second day they saw a lot of small birds going towards one of the older houses,
nestled in an overgrown garden. Mr. Magpie and his brother watched from a nearby
tree as the smaller birds sat on fences and surrounding trees and some of the
younger ones sang.
They could hardly believe what they saw. Out from the tumbled down old house, came a
little old lady and she started spreading food on a big old kitchen table. There was at least
three different kinds of bread that Mr. Magpie counted and lovely big juicy raisins,
also sesame seeds and a big bowl of fresh water.
"Fantastic", said Mr. Magpie, "that's food and water, all we need now is somewhere,
oh yes, there's a big Oak tree at the front of the house and a big Australian Gum
on one side, and an assortment of evergreen trees, bingo !!, problem solved."
They hurried back full of excitement to tell all of the relatives about the great find.
After lunch all the Magpies flew over the old house and garden. They visited the Oak tree
and all the Mrs. Magpies were very impressed.
Soon everyone had chosen the site for their new homes but, the younger members of the
family were not so pleased. They had heard there was going to be lots of food and there
was nothing on the big old table now except half a bowl of warm water. They arranged
to come back the next day to start building the new homes, and even the youngsters
said they would come and help, if there was going to be food.
