*** The Horrid Smell ***

by Bobby Mac

part 10 of 13 ( the horrid smell )

“I don't like this Arthur”, said Mr Magpies brother. “Neither do I”, said Mr. Magpie.
They flew back to join the other Magpies.
“Hummm, ummmm, well”, said Mr. Magpie. “Hummm, ummmm, well, what”, said an
irritable Dorothy, “I want my breakfast, I’m tired, I didn’t get enough sleep and I was
scared and .........”, “Do stop!!!”, they all shouted at her, which made her cry all the
more. “Take her home Dora”, said Mr. Magpie, “in fact we will all go home, I’m
beginning to think that whoever you were talking to last night about the big pets
just might be right”.
“Oh no”, said Dora Magpie, “quick everyone, back home, Will we be safe there Arthur?”.
“For now”, he said, “until I see for my self just what is going on”. Dora led the Magpies
home, they flew high in the sky so as not to bump into any large pets. All the Magpies
sat in their nests very quietly and waited while Mr. Arthur Magpie and his brother flew
around the garden, swooping low every so often and quickly going back to tree top
height so as not to fall prey to any large lurking animals. “What’s that smell?”, said Mr.
Magpies brother, “pooohh, it’s horrible, gosh it’s yuuuk!ll, what is it?”, they both said
as they followed the horrid smell. It got stronger and stronger, and there, near the little
bridge, was a great big pile of what looked like, and what smelt like, droppings
from a very large animal.
“P00000hl!”, said Arthur Magpie, “you’d have to be really, really big to do a pile like
that, really, really big, don’t you think?”. “Yes”, said Arthur’s brother, “do you think it
ate all the little birds”. “All in one go, looks like the cats as well”, said Arthur, “the cats
as well, let’s circle around and see if the ducks are about yet, or the chickens”. Just
then they saw Charlotte Hen laying on the ground by the hen house and there were two
of her eggs that she’d been sitting on for the last few days laying in the grass
uncovered. As they flew closer Charlotte didn’t move, so they swooped over the
precious eggs, she still didn’t move.
