*** Challenge Poem 11 ***

written in memory of Mr. Joseph Henry Long R.I.P.
born 1920 and died of cancer at a young age of 75

*** Dad ***

by 'Barry R. Long'

received a phone call late at night
the news left me in a state of fright
my father was in the hospital dying
to see his children he was relying
headed off there before the dawn
300 mile drive starting with a yawn
my heart feels like a heavy weight
his passing I hoped he could wait
drove straight there to his bedside
to find that the caller had not lied
this once proud hard working man
looking frail and helpless as a lamb
mother and sister crying by his bed
couldn't stop these tears they shed
nurse said I was the last one to see
and offered me a strong cup of tea
he opened his eyes I saw him smile
said hello son it's been quite a while
love you dad, sorry I'm late my reply
good bye son time has come to die
goodbye dad it's ok if you have to go
smiled once more, a glance, then so
holding his hand last breath he took
eyes went blank and his body shook
in book of the living he is not found
yet for me forever he is still around
