*** Honour and Glory ***

by 'Barry R. Long'

as I'm driving home the blade
I feel sickened by the noise he made
kill or be killed, this they say
yet a part of me also died today
thought I was prepared for war
that was before the horrors I saw
where was the honour and glory
there was just murder and it was gory
gave me a medal saying I was brave
if I did it at home they'd call me depraved
after battle we would bury the dead
but who was it that belonged to that leg
I'll never forget seeing only half my mate
begging for me to use a bullet to seal his fate
I ask myself to this day, the doing I deny
was I wrong helping my dismembered mate to die
if I get to finally return to my home
never again to war I'll roam
