*** The Tempest ***

by 'Barry R. Long'

laying in bed with the covers drawn high
winds a howling, sending leaves floating by
the trees a groaning under all the strain
their standing upright trying to sustain
my dogs and cats warmly snuggled up
can't move my feet because of the mutt
all of a sudden everything is silent and still
not a sound or peep is heard that is until
a bright white light invades the bedroom
accompanied by an enormous sonic boom
like inside a vibrator the whole house shakes
my ears still ringing from the noise it makes
scared pets practically jump out of their skin
then crawl under the blanket to hide from the din
with a sharp crack of another lightning bolt
rain starts pouring as if a monsoon is at fault
weird shades fly about the wall
cold drafts make the temperature fall
climb under the blankets and curl up tight
lying awake until the dawn and sunlight
